Sense Of Self Opens Its First Sydney Bathhouse in Surry Hills
A sprawling 1,200-square-metre urban retreat invites Sydney to slow down, switch off and reconnect with the senses.

Sydney has a new place to press pause. Sense Of Self, the Melbourne-born bathhouse known for its restorative approach to bathing and wellbeing, has officially opened its first Sydney location in Surry Hills, bringing its signature philosophy of “come as you are and take what you need” to the city.
Housed in the former Sydney Antiques Centre at 529 South Dowling Street, the 1,200-square-metre bathhouse is an immersive maze of hot mineral pools, Finnish saunas, cold plunges, steam rooms, treatment spaces and quiet corners designed for rest. Following the success of its original Collingwood bathhouse, Sense Of Self brings its considered approach to communal bathing to Sydney, offering a space where guests can step away from their screens and settle into their own rhythm.
A Space Designed to Ground You
Designed by award-winning architecture practice RITZ&GHOUGASSIAN, the Surry Hills space draws on a tactile palette of chrome, brick, shadow and rock. More than 90,000 hand-laid bricks sit alongside original windows, brickwork and concrete pillars, preserving the character of the building while creating an atmosphere that feels grounded, contemporary and enduring.
Rather than focusing on intensity or pushing guests through a prescribed wellness routine, the design encourages a gentler transition into rest. The layout unfolds as a series of spaces to explore at your own pace, whether that means a long soak, a quiet sauna session or simply finding a corner to sit and do nothing at all.

From Mineral Pools to Deep Listening
At the heart of the experience are several hot mineral pools, including a central pool built around the building's original columns. A second pool sits near the saunas, while two darker pools offer more intimate places to soak and unwind.
For those seeking a sharper sensory reset, a distinctive walk-through cold plunge delivers an invigorating contrast to the heat. Two Finnish saunas provide different experiences, from a larger space designed to accommodate events and scheduled Aufguss sessions to a smaller, quieter room for a more inward retreat.
The hammam offers another layer to the bathing ritual, with honey jasper graphite tiles creating a space defined by warmth, texture and shadow. Guests can also use Sense Of Self's refillable Hammam Kit at its dedicated Scrub Station for a self-led exfoliation ritual.
One of the most distinctive additions is the Room of Deep Listening, a first for Sense Of Self and Sydney. This dark, immersive space uses amplified, textural sound to create an opportunity to tune into the body and explore how sound can shift mood and emotion. Artist-curated audio journeys will rotate throughout the year, bringing a changing sensory dimension to the experience.
Time to Simply Be
Beyond the pools and thermal spaces, dedicated relaxation areas, reading material, in-pool games and a bathhouse kiosk encourage guests to take their time. Tea and Sossy sparkling iced tea offer a refreshing pause between soaking, plunging and sweating, while an upstairs lounge houses massage and facial treatment rooms for those wanting to extend their visit.
The experience begins with a deliberate digital disconnect. Guests can securely store their devices in lockers and spend two hours immersed in the bathhouse, with towels, robes and Hammam Kits available as add-ons at check-in.
For founder and director Freya Berwick, the Sydney opening represents four years of work to bring the vision to life.
“SOS Sydney has been four years in the making. Four years of holding a vision steady and building something that will endure,” Berwick says.
She describes Surry Hills as an intricate maze of pools, treatments and moments designed to support the body in rest, extending the original Melbourne concept into a new setting while staying true to the brand's founding philosophy.
The result is a considered addition to Sydney's wellness landscape, one that makes room for a different kind of urban escape. No devices, no pressure to perform and no prescribed way to spend your time — just an invitation to arrive as you are and take what you need.
